Mines and Buildings

Mines and building ruins provide interesting backdrops to hiking adventures, but they also provide a potential hazard. No mine shaft should be considered safe for entry. The shafts are composed mainly of crumbling, unsupported rock, and any timber shoring that exists is rotten. Vertical mine shafts are especially dangerous, since the ground around the shaft opening may be undercut and weak. Some of these shafts drop straight down for hundreds of feet.
Wooden buildings and other structures are also unsafe to enter due to rotting wood.
