This is one of the many hikes that start from the Black Rock Campground and is an excellent choice for an easy day hike. Black Rock Canyon surrounds a wide, sandy wash with lots of plant and animal life.
There are lots of Joshua Trees, Pinon Pines, and Junipers along the trail as
it winds its way through the canyon. Walking in the wash is a little tough, so
stay to the side for firmer footing.
There are a number of 'social trails' off of the wash, so unless you are
prepared for a 'mystery tour', stay in the main wash.
Along the side of the trail there is what is left of a rock watering trough
built by cowboys at the turn of the century.
As you can see, it makes
a convenient seat for a short rest after trudging up the wash.
Keep an eye out for deer and big horn sheep.
The wash gets narrow approaches the Black Rock Spring (dry), and passes
through high canyon walls. There are many large Pinion Pines that provide
a shady spot to sit and decide if you want to return to camp or continue
on to Warren Peak.
Take the Black Rock Canyon hike (above), and continue on up the wash, always taking the
right forks. Pay attention to your topo map and compass, as it is very easy
to take a wrong turn and end up on a social trail instead. Most of the 'wrong-way'
washes have lines of rocks across them, so if you don't cross the lines,
you should be ok.
There it is! I had a little trouble finding the start of the trail going up to
the top, but by heading straight up, I eventually crossed it. There is another
trail that continues past Warren Peak to a look-out point. I recommend
you check that one out as well.
Finally we are at the top, (at least my hat made it...), and we can sign our
name in the hiking register located in the red coffee can.Sign Our Guest Book | Read Our Guest Book | Desert Gold Home
